About Johnny
Johnny Young turned professional at the very young age of 16. He trained under the head professional Tommy Halpin, at the Bodenstown Golf Club, Co Kildare, and qualified as a full PGA Golf professional in 1981.
"I can still remember giving my very first golf lesson, and realising afterwards that the main thing that my pupil really wanted was...consistency. This helped shape my teaching philosophy, because that is what most golfers want from their golf lesson and from their golf game. I always say, "If they want consistency, they have to become consistent themselves." So I ask my pupils, once they have learnt and understood what they need to do, to do the same thing over and over, again and again, until it becomes natural, and eventually, turn them into Golfing Machines."
From Bodenstown, Johnny went to Celbridge Driving Range, Co Kildare, where the local Cotter Family entrusted the Head Teaching Professional role in his hands. Johnny had an amazing successful and happy time in Celbridge, and while at Celbridge, Johnny continued to compete at a very high standard. During this time, Johnny received further training, coaching and mentoring for his own game, from St. Annes Golf professional, in North Dublin, Paddy Skerritt.
Great coaching can make a huge difference.
"What I didn't realise at the time, was that within 12 months, Paddy had taught me a Golf system, my very own Golf System. Within 2 years, I had won the Irish PGA Championship, 10 Pro-Ams and tournaments. I was ranked in the top 5 in Ireland. During that time I narrowly missed out on a European Tour Card on two occasions, I started to Qualify to play in The Irish Open, it seemed that from nowhere, I had now developed into a Top Professional Golfer, all in a relatively Short Period." Over the next 5 years, Johnny was ranked in the top 5 in Ireland, winning over 30 Pro-Ams and Tournaments. Johnny now, clearly saw that, "great coaching can make a huge difference."
From Celbridge Driving Range, to Tyrellstown Driving Range in North Co Dublin, for another busy 7 Years. While there, Johnny began to reduce his own tournament play and concentrate more on coaching, which led him on the journey in search of more knowledge, which he says he will be on forever. Johnny says... "I have been fortunate to work with some of the top coaches, not only in Ireland and England, but also worldwide like Butch Harmon, Pete Cowen, Dave Pelz, Denis Pugh, Gary Smith, Jim Hardy and Karl Morris. They have all helped me to learn various teaching systems, better communication channels as well as more techniques more Philosophy and more systems."
